Paying My Respects To Abraham Lincoln
Paying My Respects To Abraham Lincoln
159 years ago today, President Abraham Lincoln died of his injuries at 7: 22 AM. The night before, the 16th President of the United States was shot point-blank in the back of the head while attending a performance of Our American Cousins at Ford's Theatre. His assassin, Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth jumped down onto the stage, injuring himself in the process, and yelled, "Sic semper tyranus," which means "Thus always with tryants."
Lincoln is my favorite President, hands down. Guiding an entire country through a civil war is no easy feat. But standing by your deeply held convictions during said war is even more courageous. He was steadfast in his conviction that slavery was wrong on all levels and fought to abolish it. But more than that, he was a Christian and trusted in the Lord's Providence. This is evident in his Second Inaugural Address when he said, "Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray that this mighty scourage of war may speedily pass way. Yet if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn by the sword, as was said three thousand years ago so still it must be said: "the judgements of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."
So on the 159th anniversary of the death of the best President the USA has ever had, let us hope that he is enjoying eternal rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior.
